How to Prevent Your Cell Phone From Water Damage

Many cell phone users accidentally drop their phones in water and find themselves having to buy a new one, but as Matt Posgai reports, there may be a way to save your phone.

When it comes to saving your phone, experts say the first step is to simply turn the phone off if the water damage hasn't done it already. But don't stop there...

"They want to remove the battery from the phone. Look inside the phone and see if there's like any kind of indicator that looks like it's changed color, look on the battery." says US Cellular Area Sales Manager Thomas Arens.

Arens also says the most important thing is to make sure the phone is off and in a safe place to dry off. But the best way to avoid a costly mistake is prevention. For example, you could put a waterproof bag or casing around your phone. But even when precautions are taken, your phone may still end up damaged...

It's called moisture damage and it can happen even when your phone is nowhere near water.
"It means that something has happened inside the phone and the phone's been exposed to some type of moisture that has caused that condensation to get in there, which then usually is a proponent or drives the corrosion that happens within the phone and usually the deterioration of the phone starts downhill after that."

If you let your phone dry out and it still doesn't turn on, there's still a chance to save your information. Arens recomends taking your phone to a service technician anytime after taking water damage to ensure the best chance of restoring your phone

Cell phones can lead to 911 problems

Shelby County 911 now gets 60 to 70 percent of its distress calls from cell phones, said director John Ellison. Sometimes, that can lead to problems.

“We were in a system where we knew where every phone was and its location,” Ellison said. “Now, every service provider is just different. You can be standing in the same yard and make two calls that will go two different places.”

Cell phones give off signals that show up on mapping devices at the 911-dispatch center, but even those can be inexact.

“You’re a dot on a map. We get your approximate position,” Ellison said. “Sixty-seven percent of the time, what you see on the map is within 50 meters of where the person actually is. Fifty meters is a pretty big area.”

Also, cell phone signals are not tied to any one address, but rather bounce off whatever tower is nearby. That can present headaches for 911 callers and dispatchers when calls are relayed to a dispatch center in the wrong county, Ellison said.

Because of that, cell phone users should be prepared with knowledge of what county they’re in as well as their approximate location.

“All the caller has to do is say, ‘I’m in Helena, I need Shelby County 911’ or ‘I’m in Calera, I need Shelby County 911,’” Ellison said.

Helena Fire Chief John Wilder said he’s seen some of these problems before.

“I’ve heard of instances where people will call with a cell phone and get Tuscaloosa County 911,” Wilder said. “It’s not a perfect system with regards to cellular phones because it depends on the cell tower. If you call from a cell phone, you need to know exactly where you are.”

Both Ellison and Wilder said those that own landlines need to do test calls to 911, especially if they’ve recently moved.

“If you change your phone company or your records, there could be human error,” Ellison said. “There’s always room for human error.”

If you’ve moved, wait five business days and then dial 911. Tell the dispatcher you’re making a test call and check to make sure you’ve gotten the dispatch center in the correct county.
For example, some Helena citizens live in Jefferson County but need their calls to go to the Shelby County 911 office, because Shelby County will dispatch the Helena Fire Department.

Sony Ericsson Revamps Its Multimedia Phone Lineup

Sony Ericsson has been facing some rough business months lately, and it unveiled three handsets with strong multimedia capabilities to help it mount a comeback.

The company showed off the Idou during February's Mobile World Congress, and it packed a whopping 12-megapixel camera and a 3.5-inch screen that can have a widescreen ratio. Sony Ericsson renamed the device the Satio, and said it would available in select markets in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The Satio will run Symbian S60 5th edition, which means it will be capable of using thousands of applications. The camera has a digital zoom, xenon flash, face-detection and image-stabilization software, and the ability to geotag photos.

The Satio will have built-in Wi-Fi, 3G, and EDGE to keep users connected on the go. Other radios include Bluetooth capable of A2DP, and a GPS chip that can be used for location-based searches. Users will also be able to play 3-D and high-definition games on the Satio, and watch various types of media files.

The Yari is another midlevel handset that's trying to capitalize on the boom in mobile gaming. The candy bar-shaped phone has accelerometers that can be used for motion controls with games, which is similar to how Nintendo's Wii controllers work.

The handset is not just for fun and games though, as it also packs a 5-megapixel camera, assisted-GPS, instant messaging, and Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support. The Yari is slated to be released in the fourth quarter.

Sony Ericsson also announced the Aino handset, and it's aimed at users who want to access their videos on the go. The handset has a slide-down numeric keyboard with a 3.2-inch touch screen, and users can stream video, music, and other content from a PlayStation 3 on to the handset via Wi-Fi or a cellular data connection. The Aino can also be used as a remote control for the PlayStation 3, and it can view several European TV stations.

The handset has an 8.1-megapixel camera with image stabilization software, Wi-Fi, 3G connectivity, Bluetooth, YouTube access, assisted-GPS, and an FM radio. The Aino is expected to be released in the same time frame as the Yari and the Satio.

Motorola plans $200M more in spending cuts, predicts new smart phones will make splash

Motorola officials said they will make $200 million in additional spending cuts even as they confidently predicted that their new smart phones will make a splash for the Christmas holiday.
The $200 million in extra cuts will be split between the cell-phone division and broadband mobility and corporate expenses. Motorola Co-CEO Greg Brown said Thursday there are "no new announcements" of additional layoffs "at this time." The cuts bring Motorola's full-year cost savings target up to $1.7 billion.

The Schuamburg-based cell-phone maker said it recently cut 7,500 jobs. Previous announcements put the figure at 7,000.

Motorola, whose share of the cellular handset business has fallen to about 7 percent from roughly 25 percent four years ago, is working with "multiple (phone) carriers around the world" to roll out new Motorola smart phones based on the Android operating platform for the winter holidays, said Co-CEO Sanjay Jha.

Web sites have started circulating prototypes, including a phone code-named "Calgary" with a sliding design, QWERTY keyboard and social networking capabilities.

Motorola's goal is to put select high-end smart-phone services in phones priced from $100 to $200, and to focus less on selling $50 phones in emerging markets "where we weren't making money," Jha said. If Jha succeeds in separating the wireless business as a stand-alone company by Oct. 31, 2010, he stands to reap $104.4 million in compensation.

Asked whether Motorola would partner with Microsoft to make an iPhone rival, Jha said, "We are extremely open to partnering with a number of major industry players, but our focus is Android" (Google's wireless operating system).

Motorola posted a smaller first-quarter loss Thursday than Wall Street expected, and regained its standing as the world's fourth largest maker of cell phones by selling 14.7 million handsets -- half that of a year ago. The quarterly loss totaled $231 million, or 13 cents a share. Sales fell 28 percent to $5.4 billion.

Motorola has a ways to go to convince skeptics that it can turn around its sagging fortunes in the face of tough competition from Apple's iPhone, Palm's Pre and Research In Motion's Blackberry.
"Motorola has done a good job of cost-cutting to stop the hemorrhagic flow of cash out of the company, but is Motorola doing enough Research and Development to put out something RAZR-like?" said James Brehm, industry analyst at Frost & Sullivan, referring to Motorola's last top-selling phone.

In this post i prepare a file about Double Sim Technology(DST) Mobiles. Lets start with some questions...

What is double sim technology ?

Double sim technology is a mobile technology that enables to be able to use two sim card in the same mobile at the same time.

Are there any benefits of this technology ?

Of course, you can use two sim card at the same time and any more you don't have to carry two mobiles. DST makes two mobiles one.

Is it safe ?

DST was used in Chinese mobiles. So there was some doubt about this technology but recently General Mobile, Samsung, LG released their DST mobiles.

How is it work ?

There are no differences from other mobiles. There are two card slot different from other mobiles. Just, you need a bit time to get used to using this mobile. You are using two different mobile number at the same time. What happens if two calls come at the same time. This mobiles show the incoming calls, emails and text messages on screen from which sim they have come and you can delay one call while answering other.

Now lets take a look at these mobiles.

Our first mobile is Samsung D880 DuoS.

Everyday we are waking up with new developments, with new technologies and mobile phones are the most attracted from these developments. Any more, it is said no need to offices. Mobile phones are doing everything for us that can be done in office... Will you check your e-mails...Ooh then check it from your mobile. You wanna listen music ? Aha don't look at so far, it is in your pocket. Hmm maybe you need to search something and you need internet, right ? Don't matter... Your number one assistant, your mobile, is with you. Search and surf.. who can stop you ? Are you lost ? Ok, don't panic... Your mobile is your GPS, too

2.6 Billion Mobile Phones in the world

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) reports that mobile phone usage has doubled worldwide since 2000 and reached 2.6 billion, with developing countries leading the surge.

According to reports 4 billion people use landline and mobile phone services. ITU stated that 1 billion mobile phones started to serve n only two years from last of 2004 to last of 2006. 200 milion mobile pshones were sold in first six months of 2006 in India and China.

The bulk of the growth in mobile phone usage came from large developing countries, in particular China, India, and Russia. Such countries now account for 56% of all mobile phone users and 79% of the growth since 2000. China alone is now reporting 310 million users, one quarter its population yet larger than the population of the United States. India claims 44.5 million mobile phone subscribers, a 25% increase in 2004 alone. Russia, meanwhile, jumped from 36.5 million subscribers a year ago to 60 million as of September 2004.

Samsung Plans Armani Phone

Luxury Brand Players and Mobile Phone player continue to cooperate to bring new freshes to mobile phone world. After the deals between LG and Prada, Motorola and Dolce&Gabbana ; Samsung Electronics is also in discussions with luxury brand Giorgio Armani on jointly producing electronics items.

Sources close to the deal say Samsung and Armani have been in talks since early this year, with the process in the final stages of discussion. The Italian designer will not only provide the designs but will also actively participate in the development of new products.

"We are now in talks with Armani to work together in making premium goods such as mobile phones and televisions," a Samsung spokesperson said, declining to comment further.

Samsung develops High-Density Memory for mobile phones

Samsung Electronics announced that it has developed a 4 gigabyte(GB) MCP(multi-chip package) for mobile phones that for the first time forgoes the need for an external memory card slot and also eliminates having to develop interface software for all types of NAND memory.

Samsung's new moviMCP is a multi-chip package carrying an embedded (moviNAND) memory solution, which provides a simple-to-design memory package that satisfies the high-speed data transmission needs of mobile phones, while fully supporting the communication features within the handset.

The new moviMCP combines a 4GB embedded memory card. which consists of two 16Gb (gigabit) NAND flash chips and a controller, together with a 1Gb mobile DRAM chip to support the processor and a 2Gb NAND flash chip for general handset operations. This provides a total memory capacity of 35Gbs.

Samsung's use of an eMMC interface, the MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA) standard for embedded memory, resolves the design complexity inherent in the functional differences of the various types of NAND flash, by integrating an embedded controller, into the moviMCP. This removes the need to develop interface software for each type of NAND flash.

The new moviMCP stacks several memory functions vertically to enable a small footprint. Its high density eliminates the need for having to also provide an external expansion slot. Samsung's moviMCP is currently available for OEM sampling.

According to market research firm iSuppli, the 3G mobile phone market - which is the main target for Samsung's new moviMCP - is expected to reach 392 million units in 2007 and show an approximately 40 percent compounded annual growth rate from 2007 through 2010.

India's June Cellular Additions Reach Record 7.34 Million Users

Bharti Airtel Ltd., Reliance Communications Ltd. and other Indian carriers added a record 7.34 million mobile-phone users in June, the regulator said.

India had 185.13 million cellular-phone subscribers last month, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said in an e- mailed statement. The total number of telephone users, including fixed-line customers, stood at 225.21 million. India added 6.57 million mobile-phone users in May.

Telecommunications penetration in India expanded to 19.86 percent of the nation's population, compared with 19.26 percent at the end of May, the Telecom Regulatory Authority said today.

The world's cheapest wireless call rates are boosting usage in India. China's mobile-phone users totaled more than 500 million in June, double that of the U.S.

A third of mobile phone users will use HSDPA by 2011

By 2011, over a third of mobile phone users will switch to HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access).

According to a recently published report by Korea IDC entitled, 'HSDPA, and market analysis and prospect for wireless broadband (Wibro) in Korea,' HSDPA will acquire 7.4% of the entire cellular phone market in 2007. This rate will jump drastically to 14% in 2008, 20.5% in 2009, and finally reach 32.6% in 2011, which will correspond to approximately 14.92 million users. Though its sales rate merely amounted to 0.2% in 2006, it is projected to rise to 38.8% by 2011.

USIM, universal subscriber identification module, will play a pivotal role in developing HSDPA. This chip currently uses a locking device, but the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) is making efforts to unlock it for the purpose of achieving complete openness. The USIM chip, which stores mobile communication information as well as personal data, will be installed in mobile phones.

MIC plans to unlock the locking device on all HSDPA and HSUPA mobile phones by 2008. To this end, the Ministry will set up a USIM team, which will include business and consumer organizations. Achieving USIM openness is expected to expand the market presence of HSDPA.

By the end of this year, HSDPA will be upgraded to HSUPA. HSUPA, whose maximum speed is 5.76 Mbps, will signify a dramatic improvement from HSDPA, whose current speed is 384 Kbps. Meanwhile, KT, a Wibro company, is scheduled to build Wibro Version 2, a network that supports an upload speed of 8 Mbps and a download speed of 34.6 Mbps. Accordingly, the speed competition between the two technologies is expected to intensify.

5 million Wibro subscribers - possibility?
Wibro is expected to acquire one hundred and thirty thousand subscribers in 2007, six hundred thousand in 2008, 1.4 million in 2009, and finally 3.9 million in 2011. At that point, the difference in the number of subscriber between Wibro and HSDPA is expected to be only marginal.

Largely, this will result from the conservative investment and marketing strategies that Wibro companies such as KT and SK Telecom employ as a result of their lack of confidence in the prospects of this business. If the market becomes more favorable upon introducing killer applications and popular terminals, Wibro-related investment and marketing will grow. Furthermore, according to the aforementioned report, KT will aggressively build infrastructures in its effort to secure subscribers if the market takes these positive turns. Should this happen, the report predicts that the number of subscribers will reach eight hundred thousand by 2008 and 5 million by 2011.

The report also predicts that the relations between Wibro and HSDPA will remain complementary rather than competitive because HSDPA is better than the Wibro with regard to mobility and accessibility, while the latter is better for data transmission purposes.

According to Han In-Kyu, a senior researcher at Korea IDC, "price will be the most important factor in deciding the success of the respective technologies because communication costs per household are increasing as Wibro and HSDPA/HSUPA continue to provide new services and contents. Because mobile phone internet service is provided in package plans, service providers should consider offering (partial) fixed-price plans to lower the cost for households."

"To develop profitable services," he emphasizes, "cooperation between various content and terminal (equipment) providers must be strengthened." He also points out that although mobile shopping and mobile lectures have been tested, the lack of appropriate killer applications had hampered their success. This, according to him, is a problem that must be addressed as soon as possible.

Smartphone adoption growing fast; WiFi phone sales expected to top $145 billion in 2010

Sales of mobile phones, including smartphones, dropped 13% to $35.5 billion in the first quarter of 2007 following a seasonally strong pre-Christmas quarter in 4Q06, according to Infonetics Research in its latest "Mobile and WiFi Phones and Subscribers" report.

In the long term, mobile phone unit shipments are forecast to increase due to growth in developing countries, while revenue is forecast to decrease as the cost of basic units sold in developing markets continues to fall and competition in developed and saturated markets continues to increase, the report says.

"To date, smartphone purchasers have been largely business power-users, but the launch of Apple's iPhone and Samsung's BlackJack -- media-playing smartphones that appeal to consumers -- is giving the smartphone segment a boost, and could change the dynamics of the mobile phone market. Vendors will design more consumer-oriented smartphones, and cause fierce competition among incumbent players," said Richard Webb, directing analyst for wireless at Infonetics Research.

Other mobile phone highlights from the report:

Worldwide revenue for mobile phones is expected to total $117.5 billion in 2010, an 18% drop from 2006

GSM phones made up 45% of worldwide mobile phone revenue in 2006, smartphones made up 18%, and the remainder was made up by CDMA, W-CDMA, and CDMA2000 phone sales

Worldwide revenue for the small but fast growing smartphone segment grew 10% in 1Q07 from 4Q06, driven by the wider availability of 3G, which unlocks the media application potential of smartphones beyond email

In 2006, 20% of total mobile phone revenue came from North America, 34% from EMEA, 36% from Asia Pacific, and 10% from CALA

The number of mobile subscribers grew 26% to 2.5 billion in 2006

Meanwhile, worldwide WiFi phone revenue, though up significantly in 2006, fell 8% to $5 billion in 1Q07, but is projected to post strong double-digit growth every year through 2010, when it will top $145 billion, as WiFi is incorporated into a growing range of mobile phones.

Enterprises are ramping up adoption of WiFi phones, driven by increased use of wireless LANs and IP PBX technology, while consumers are adopting WiFi phones because of their increasing adoption of broadband connections with wireless and VoIP-enabled CPE. At the same time, operators are launching dual-mode FMC services, which will also drive adoption of WiFi phones.

Second year of competition rewards developers and entrepreneurs with valuable prizes for applications and business plans in the mobile space

Nokia, together with a number of high-profile sponsors today announced the launch of its second annual competition for developers and entrepreneurs working in the mobile space. The 'Mobile Rules!' competition aims to promote excellence in both applications developed for mobile and for businesses launching or promoting services in the mobile arena. The initiative is in its second year. In 2006, it was launched as the 'Web2Mobile' competition; the change of name reflects the increased scope, prizes and reach of this year's contest.

Commenting on the launch of the competition, Vesa Luiro, Director, Communication Solutions with Nokia, said: "At the heart of Nokia's business lies innovation - both in mobile devices and in the services and solutions that will enhance the experience of mobile users. The competition is divided into two 'tracks'. Samsung passes Motorola, takes number two market share spot

As the two, next-largest handset vendors fling themselves at the dual prospects of entry-level phones in emerging markets and upgrade cycles in mature markets, all in an effort to compete with Nokia Corp.’s breakaway, a few rivets are coming loose.

Motorola Inc.’s historic stumble has enabled Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. to seize, by a hair, the global, second-place ranking in market share.

Samsung churned out 37.4 million handsets in the second quarter, compared with Motorola’s self-projected volume of 35 million to 36 million. Samsung’s unit volume is up nearly 50% over the year-ago quarter. Analysts said that the vendor’s efforts in emerging markets are finding a degree of success and, like Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, it has capitalized on Motorola’s weakness in the European market to gain share.

Samsung’s financial results on its massive second-quarter volume play are another matter. The overall company earned revenue of $16 billion for the second quarter, a 4% nudge up from the year-ago quarter. Net income in the quarter was $1.5 billion, down 5% from the year-ago quarter.

Samsung’s average selling price, as in Sony Ericsson’s case, has eroded with a push for market share. Samsung’s ASP in the quarter was $148, a 5% drop from the previous quarter.

The company attributed its performance to its Ultra Edition line of handsets in mature markets and its increased volume of entry-tier handsets in emerging markets.

The relationship, announced in conjunction with Microsoft’s launch of the new Microsoft Dynamics AX Mobile Sales solution and Microsoft Dynamics Mobile Development Tools, paves the way for Motorola PartnerSelect members globally to port their existing enterprise mobility solutions to the Microsoft Dynamics platform. From direct store delivery applications for manufacturers to point of care solutions in the healthcare sector, Microsoft Dynamics AX customers can now empower their mobile workers with innovative Motorola enterprise mobility solutions that can improve productivity and decision-making at the point of activity.

Because enterprise mobility solutions require both hardware and software applications, the relationship between Motorola and Microsoft will present new opportunities for both vendors’ channel partners. A camera phone that can deliver over 10 million pixels was unveiled.

Samsung Electronics has introduced release of world’s first 10 mega pixel camera phone (Model: SCH-B600) on the 10th.

The latest release topped its previously leased world's first 7 megapixel by reducing the thickness and weight down to 6mm and 10 grams respectively. Camera function has total effective pixels up to 10.36 million with 3X optical zoom and 5X digital zoom. It also includes LED assisted autofocus feature, enabling users to capture clear shots in dark, white balance control, auto/manual focusing and 16 different user-selectable capture modes.

All desirable SCH-B600 cameraphone's features rival high end digital cameras but it also comes with hefty price tag. The B600 will be introduced thru SKT in Korean market next week at around 900,000 won (USD $900) a pop according to Samsung.

Samsung explained "The high color reproduction TFT-LCD produces the highest possible display for its size. The photo-fine chromarich LCD can reproduce 16 million colors(NTSC standard LCD TVs), virtually reproducing any color found in nature, a true color appellation."

The high-end handset supports South Korea's satellite digital broadcasting (DMB) service, Bluetooth, MP3 files and complete EV-DO 3G data support along with host of other advanced features.

It also has the "Anycall Band" feature, where each person using this phone can play a specific melody of instruments and arrange it together to create a song for downloading. It even comes with built-in audio book function that allows listening to popular fairy tale in four different languages (English, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese).

Motorola Completes Acquisition of Modulus Video

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced it has completed its acquisition of Modulus Video, Inc., a privately-held company. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Modulus Video is a leader and innovator in MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) compression systems designed for delivery of high value video content in the IPTV, cable, broadcast and satellite marketplace. Modulus Video has partnered with Motorola for over two years bringing high-quality encoding solutions to key customers around the world.

This acquisition complements Motorola’s recent acquisitions of Broadbus, Kreatel, Tut Systems and Netopia in the creation and delivery of an integrated, end-to-end video delivery system for multiple network architectures.

Modulus Video will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola and will be integrated into the Motorola Home and Networks Mobility business. Motorola intends to maintain Modulus Video operations in Sunnyvale, California.
